In its native range it often reaches a height of 80 feet. The Soil Conservation Service first introduced this species into the United States over 90 years ago and for many years it didn't receive much attention. In recent years it has become very popular due to its rapid growth and prolific acorn production. The sawtooth oak is a member of the white oak family; therefore, its acorns require two years to mature and the size is similar to the white oak. Acorn production begins as early as age 5 years in the sawtooth, compared to 20 to 25 years in our native oaks. This tree has shown promise in adapting to a wide variety of sites, thus becoming more versatile than many of our natural oaks that are site sensitive. The sawtooth oak can be grown on sites considerably more severe than those normally considered adequate for hardwood production. Planting Requirements - Sawtooth Oak prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soils of moderate fertility, but adapts well to relatively poor, dry soils of neutral or slightly alkaline pH. It thrives in full sun to partial sun (but is shade tolerant in youth) and is grown in zones 5 to 9. Plant your bareroot trees and shrubs as soon as possible after you receive your order. Do not let the roots dry out. Store in a cool, shaded area. Before planting, soak the roots in a pail of water for a few hours. When planting , make sure not to break the sometimes brittle roots of the plants, Dig the hole about twice as wide as the root system and about the same depth as the root system.. Do not plant your plants too deep. The top of the root system should be level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. After planting, tightly pack the soil in and around your new planting hole, Next, mulch around your plant (2-3 inches deep) with straw or bark chips, Water thoroughly after planting.
