It is decorated with underglaze  koi or goldfish and swimming squid amongst other undersea life and plankton.With the top in place it measures 20.5" tall and is about 10.5 in diam at the fattest point.It is signed in the clay on the base. I would date this from the latter 1970's, the Jaws Era, when there was a epidemic of shark mania. This is really  quite original, I have seen tons of Orientalia in my time,but never any thing on a classic Asian inspired form with so inventive a key note. Mr. Hensley has his own web site where you can view his current studio work both pottery and porcelain, and it is absolutely stunning.This memorable piece was purchased as a 40th wedding anniversary gift in 1981 at Surroundings Gallery,in  SOHO, NYC. Mr. Hensley was born in Borger, Texas and is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute and completed his M.F.A. at Rhode Island School of Design in 1974.
