I was quite impressed to find that it had a very good charge right out of the unopended package. Not bad considering 2 months had elapsed since manufacture. Good to know that when you go and grab it, it will likely still have a good charge, even if you forgot to plug it in. First thing I did was leave it on overnight to discharge it completely, then a quick charge of a little over an hour and a half and I was ready to test it. I found that is was very bright with good clean white light and an even dispersion and a nice broad range. Even after leaving it on for 5 hours it was still going strong enough to use. After the second charge/discharge cycle I found the performance had improved again. The selectable spot light / flaslight on the end of the tube is a real bonus allowing you to cast a bright and focused beam into tight spots.
