MARLY by Daum This collection celebrates the one of the most glorious periods in French history, the 18th century. The Marly's horses are the result of 5 years work for the sculptor Guillaume Coustou. He was born in Lyon in 1677 and died in Paris in 1746. He began his career at the Chateau de Versailles. He was working for the service of King Louis 14th and was considered to be the most talented scupltor of his generation. In 1739, Coustou was acknowledged as the leader of the French School of Sculptor and was commissioned to produce a work for Chateau de Marly. This royal domain which lay to the west of Paris was originally created to glorify Louis 14th, the "sun king". At it's center lays the sun pavillion symbolizing the signs of the zodiac. After several rough-hewings, the version finally retained, according to a miniature, represents two escape horses that two Native American Indians are trying to reign in. Coustou possessed an extraordinary sense of detail and had the finest horses brought to his workshop that he could do a live study of them. The work was first sculpted as a life size plaster then later on cut directly into two enormous blocks of marble of outstanding quality. The final sculpture was transported on water to the Marly bridge and installed to the Chateau de Marly. As soon as it was erected, the perfection of it's detail and movement made it a masterpiece of national modern sculpture. Recently the original pieces were placed inside the inner Marly courtyard of Frances' Louvre ide Paris. Copies adorned the Champ Elysees. Seeking collection for men based on universal theme of a horse, DAUM was inspired by this masterpiece which represents the zenith of the barouque style. These horses in action as they arise their hind legs, with their manes blowing in the wind give off an unrivalled sense of energy and vigour. The Marly collection exists in blue and gray. This a limited edition by DAUM.
