Description
Albion Antiek Marguerite Wildenhain-Friedlaender Rare 1937 "5 o' Clock" Teapot     This listing is for a rare teapot designed by Marguerite Wildenhain in 1937 and produced by the Sphinx pottery in Holland for the World Expo in 1937 in Paris, France. The theme of that exhibition was "Art & Technique". The Dutch government who wanted to have a strong Dutch representation during this expo asked 3 artists/designers to make a design which would be produced by a leading Dutch industrial manufacturer. This project was financed by the government. Marguerite Wildenhain was asked to design a service which would be produced by the Sphinx pottery from Maastricht. The resulting tea service which was named "5 o' Clock" won second prize at the expo. At the same expo Marguerite and her husband also received several awards for their studio pottery of 't Kruikje. Marguerite Wildenhain-Friedlaender (1896-1985) was born in Lyon (France) and led the most fascinating life. She moved to Berlin with her parents when she was a child. She studied and worked at the pottery department at the Bauhaus where she met her husband Franz Wildenhain. In 1933 when the Nazi's came to power she left for Holland where she operated her studio "'t Kruikje" together with husband Franz. In 1939 when the War had started she left for the USA where she founded "Pond Farm Pottery" in Guerneville (California) in 1942. Her husband joined her in 1947. The teapot in this auction was designed by Marguerite during her 6 year stay in Holland and is a nice example of Bauhaus legacy (combining artistry with industry) and shows clean simple lines. Condition is perfect: no chips, no cracks and no repairs. Measurements: teapot measures 9-1/8" (23,2 cm) long (handle to spout) and 5-5/8" (14,3 cm) high (to top of finial). Please excuse any glares (white patches) that you may see in the pictures, these are caused by reflections of light on the glaze and are not on the actual object itself.
