Description
Here  is a true rarity in American Cut glass. These never turn up for sale and I do not believe I have ever seen one on ebay.  It is a 24 inch tall umbrella stand vase. I would imagine these were special order or display pieces for a jewelry store. The sheer size will catch the attention of even a non-collector.  If you ever wanted a trophy piece to have in your home this is it.     The umbrella stand is impressive. One of the main motifs is an x shape set of four tusks. Tusks were said to be among the most difficult for the cutter to execute. And to carve these huge tusk, well the cutter was just showing off. They are silky in their finish and somewhat magical to touch. Along with the tusks are some nicely detailed hobstars and great sections of cane.    A knowledgeable collector directed me to an ad in the cut glass ad books that appears to be this pattern. It is in book 3 on page OCA-1 The ad was published in 11-11-1908 maaking the peice exactly 100 years old. It appeared in Jewelers Circular Weekly.  The maker was A. E. O'Connor who was the son of John O'Connor . John was the chief designer and head of the cutting department at Dorflinger glass works.  Little is know about the production of Arthur O'Connor but from this vase he apparently did very special pieces. I have read that the O'Connors used Dorflinger blanks. So there is a good possibility this was a Dorflinger blank. It certainly has the quallity to be one.   In Martha Swan's American Cut and Engraved glass she lists Umbrella stands in the rarities section. She shows two others that are 24 inches tall. They are on pages 121 and 122.    Don't miss this once in a lifetme opportunity to own a true rarity. Beat the Christmas rush and treat yourself to something special!    The glass is a blown blank and very clear and brilliant.  Wonderful hand polished piece. The huge tusks must have taken a great deal of work to carve and then polish out. It's a quality piece all the way.     The piece measures 24 inches tall and 7 5/8 inches wide at the top. It is in excellent condition with no chips or flakes.  It does flouresce under the blacklight to indicate American Brilliant.   Each winning item will be carefully packaged for safe delivery. Particularly fragile items are generally double boxed with packing between the boxes. This is the only safe delivery method for antique cut glass. Winners of multiple auctions will receive a shipping discount if not free shipping on the additional items as long as they can be safely packed together.
