Alternating stripes of end grain hard Maple and chocolate Walnut laminated together to form this sturdy chopping block. This is the one on my kitchen counter. This butcher block measures 16 inches wide by 9 inches deep and is a full 2.5 inches thick. It is supported by non marring brown rubber feet. How about adding a matching wine rack?The wood products from The Vermont Butcher Block are made from responsibly harvested forests.  (We are not using certified wood)  We purchase all of our wood locally to help the Vermont economy.Our products are functional and beautiful at the same time.  Individual pieces of wood are hand assembled so all of the grain lays in attractive patterns showcasing the natural beauty of the wood.  We use complimentary closed grain wood, such as Domestic Walnut, to provide some contrast to the lightness of the Rock Maple.  We use wide Rock Maple boards, 5/4" thick to start, usually 6" wide.  Compared to the 1" x ¾" pieces of Maple that the mass manufacturer uses.  Our butcher blocks end up being 2½ -3" thick depending on the size of the butcher block.  Our cutting boards are usually 1½" thick.  They are weighty and one feels confident while cutting on any of our products.  That's what we like to sell, "cutting with confidence."We stagger our glue joints to strengthen the construction of the boards and blocks.  There are no vertical straight lines in our products.  Straight lines are indicative of cheaply made mass-produced product (and it's usually expensive!)We laser engrave our product care instructions on the bottoms of the pieces so there are no instructions to lose.  They're on the bottom, forever! Unlike the new craze of bamboo cutting boards, we use an FDA approved PVA glue and food safe mineral oil as a treatment.  Boards made outside of the U.S. can use any glue available to them and say it meets food safe standards, there is no regulation involved. Our products are thoroughly treated with food safe mineral oil before they leave so they are well prepared to meet their new owners.
