Presenting a Mid Twentieth Century Vintage Danish Modern DANSK Combination Pepper Mill and Salt Shaker Design by Jens Harald Quistgaard (1919 – 2008) for Dansk Designs Ltd. (see below for information about this renown artist designer) At the height of the Danish Modern movement, Jens Quistgaard and Dansk spiced up the design world with a stunning series of sculptural wood salt and pepper mills Made in Denmark of beautifully grained dark brown teak with a natural oiled finish The salt shaker top tablet shaped section turns the grinder, has 7 holes and a removable cork plug stopper with a wooden button top. The grinding mechanism has a rotating disk that covers an opening for filling the bulbous bottom section with peppercorns This high quality, highly collectable tableware piece has classic mod, space age, or Eames Mid 20th Century style! Collector’s Reference Book: Danish Pepper Jens Quistgaard’s Teak Pepper Mills Author: Mark Perlson Identification: Marked under base: DANSK DESIGNS LTD DENMARK IHQ © (What looks like “I” in IHQ may be misinterpreted for a “J” as in JHQ for Jens Harald Quistgaard… makes more sense) Condition: No chips, cracks, splits, restoration or repair. On close inspection we find one minor smooth shallow 3/8 inch long indentation and a miniscule natural wood indent spot to bottom section (both can be seen in photo). The grinding mechanism is in working order. Bright white spots in the photo are light reflective glare. Please examine all photos and ask questions before bidding or completing purchase Size: approximately 7.25 inches (18.5 cm) high, 3.50 inch diameter top salt section and base Scroll Down for Under Base Photo About the Artist Designer and Dansk: Jens Harald Quistgaard, born in Denmark on April 23, 1919, a celebrated Danish industrial designer whose clean-lined and immensely popular pieces for the Dansk brand of tableware helped define the Scandinavian Modern style. His father, Harald, was a well-known sculptor who fostered his son’s early creative interests. As a young man, Jens served an apprenticeship at Georg Jensen Solvsmedje, the well-known Danish silversmiths in Copenhagen. During World War II, he was a member of the Danish underground. A freelance designer after the war, he worked in a variety of media including wood, metal, glass, stainless steel, and ceramics. Today a division of the Lenox Group, Dansk was founded in 1954 by Ted Nierenberg, an American entrepreneur and engineer. Originally based in Great Neck, New York, the company quickly became known for making sophisticated European styles accessible to American consumers. In 1954 Mr. Nierenberg visited Copenhagen, Denmark, where he caught sight of hand-forged flatware by Jens Quistgaard in a museum. It was made of stainless steel with teak handles, an unusual marriage of materials at the time. He sought out Mr. Quistgaard, persuaded him that his singular creations could be properly mass-produced, and Dansk was born. Working from his studio in Copenhagen, Mr. Quistgaard designed characteristically Danish craft aesthetic pieces for Dansk for 30 years from its inception until the mid-1980s. Jens died on January 4, 2008, at his home in Vordingborg, Denmark, aged 88. Jens Quistgaard's work was publicly recognized when he won the Lunning Prize in 1954, the Scandinavian Award, and six Milan Triennali awards. His work is in the permanent collections of major museums, among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Museum of Modern Art, and the Louvre in Paris, France.
