Rare Staffordshire ARTIC SCENERY Platter 1835 Description & Details VERY RARE STAFFORDSHIRETRANSFERWARE PLATTER ARTIC SCENERY Unknown maker Staffordshire England c. 1835 Fresh from our recent buying trip to Enlgand, we are pleased to offer this stunningly beautiful "Arctic Scenery" platter, 13 1/2 " long x 11" across, transfer printed in a rich blue. Described once as a "glorious perversion of geography", the scalloped edge platter features cartouches of tropical wild cats (ocelot, jaguar and leopard) and a water buffalo around the rim separated by garlands of flowers, surrounding a central image of Eskimo hunters at their igloo camp. According to the Transferware Collectors Club (www.transcollectorsclub.org) database, the image on this platter is one of at least 9 scenes from the Arctic Scenery series. Featured in Coysh and Henrywood's "Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery", the series represents episodes catalogued in the 1821 and 1824 illustrated exploration journals of Sir Edward Parry from his travels in the northern part of Canada. The source print of the platter's central image is the "Sledges of the Esquimaux" from Parry's "Journal of a Second Voyage". Other scenes from the series pattern came from arctic views in John Franklin's "Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the years 1819 to 1822" published in 1823. The animals in the borders are said to come from copperplate engravings from two sources: Bewick's "General History of Quadrupeds" and William Jardine's "Natural History". The obscure series is discussed also in Elizabeth Collard'ss book "The Potters' View of Canada." Condition is very good, clear and crisp transfers and no chips, cracks, staining or repairs.There is a glaze rub or flake on the interior rim of the well.
