Description
Rare, Vintage Hermione Pottery MirrorDescription and Item InformationUp for sale is this rare and fabulous, vintage Hermione California pottery mirror. Please excuse the glare and reflection in the photos. This piece consists of a light blue pottery frame with lots of applied, hand-formed pink and dark blue flowers with green leaves. Inside the frame is an oval glass mirror. This has a faded green backing (fabric covering a hard material, possibly wood) which is affixed with screws. At the bottom of the pottery frame are two small, painted wooden ball feet which are affixed with screws. The frame looks to be made from red or reddish clay and the applied floral ornaments are made of white clay. This piece has substantial weight, weighing just under 7 pounds, unpacked. This large piece has overall approximate dimensions of 15 3/4 inches tall by 13 7/8 inches wide by 2 7/8 inches thick (front to back thickness). The visible mirror area is about 11 1/2 inches tall by 9 3/4 inches wide. Although I've seen plenty of the Hermione pottery heads with the coiled copper wire hair, and other small Hermione vanity items, I've never seen a mirror like this before! This would be a wonderful addition to a collection of vintage California pottery.Fixed, insured, well-packed shipping within the lower 48 U.S. states is listed above. U.S. shipping will be via USPS priority mail or FedEx ground (seller will choose shipping method). For international shipping prices, or shipping to Alaska or Hawaii, please ask for a quote, if desired. Thanks!IdentificationThis piece is marked at the base, in between the wooden ball feet, "Hermione." Hermione Palmer (1905-1987) was a California artist who is listed in Hughes' Artists in California 1786-1940 and on AskArt. As per Hughes, she was born in California and attended UC Berkeley during the 1920s. Palmer married into the Chase banking family. As an artist, her main mediums were painting, illustrating, and ceramics. This Hermione Palmer pottery item was produced in Glendale, California during the early 1940s. Earlier, during the 1930s, Palmer had produced work from red clay utilizing the California Faience art pottery and tile facility in Berkeley, California. According to Jack Chipman's California Pottery Scrapbook, when Palmer moved her production to the Los Angeles area, Chauncey Thomas of California Faience was affiliated with her business.ConditionThis looks very good overall. The condition is wonderful given its highly fragile nature, size, and weight. There are a few chips and flakes to the applied flowers and leaves, but these are minor overall. I have shown the ones I noticed in the photos above, circled in yellow. If there are other small flakes or chips, I did not find them when examining this closely. The light blue pottery frame has no chips or cracks. The leaves and flowers are dusty and need a careful cleaning. The mirror glass looks very good with a few tiny dark spots. The green fabric backing is faded. There is a faded, green ribbon attached to the back that is also supposed to be attached to the stand that is used to prop this up; the ribbon is severed, as shown, so this should be pinned or repaired before attempting to display this in an upright position. Please review the photos, and ask any questions you may have prior to bidding or buying.Important Notes and AlertsI do not use "Second Chance Offers."
