WC Anderson ABP Cut Glass Collar Box' Description AMERICAN BRILLIANT CUT GLASS VERY LARGE COLLAR BOX FERN & GARDEN PATTERN ~* W.C. ANDERSON *~ This rare piece is absolutely beautiful! I am sure that many of you have never seen one of these before and may not know what it is. This is a cut glass collar box in the Fern & Garden patterns, designed by W.C Anderson. It was used to store the removable collars that men wore in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Anderson is responsible for designing the majority of the patterns cut by Libbey. Even today there are study groups which are dedicated to finding out exactly how much of an influence he had on American Brilliant Cut Glass. This item measures approx. 5 ½” tall and is 7 ½” in diameter at the widest part. It weighs approx. 5 lbs. 12 oz. The lid of this box is hinged and opens. The lid is cut with a huge eight petal pinwheel flower which has flashed petals and a 16 point star center. Between each point, there is an eight point flower on a thin stem Around the edge of the lid, there is a chain of punties. The edges of the opened lid and body are silver plated. The hinge on the back side is sturdy and in excellent shape. There is a small tab on the front to assist in the opening of this piece. On the inside of this piece, there is a hollow cylinder which is used to hold the collars in place after a man was finished wearing them. The body is cut with a chain of punties at the top and bottom. Between these chains, there are four large fern leaves which have flashing. Between these, are eight petal flowers that are on stems with branches at their sides. The bottom of this piece is cut with an intricate eight point star. The points are filled with crosshatching and have a split triangle flanking them. The star has double crossed miter diamonds as well as raised fields with an eight point star cut into the center. The center of the star has a 16 point hobstar button. This piece is in excellent condition. It does not have any chips, flakes or cracks. The blank is clear with a water white color. This collar box is an amazing piece of cut glass. It is a rare find that you don’t really ever see come up at auction. This piece is a gem that would be a fabulous addition to any cut glass collection. Don’t pass up the chance to own this treasure.
