Description
I am listing this piece for a Seattle couple who are downsizing from house to condo, and who can no longer display their large, lustrous and elegant Chihuly Macchia series bowl.  The Macchia pieces were Chihuly's earliest thin glass works, and were the first to achieve a multicolored, spotted (macchia in Italian) surface. Created & signed by Dale Chihuly in 1986, this large bowl has a rare combination of patterns and hues that makes it an extraordinarily beautiful piece in this series.  This piece displays the essence of his work of that period (mid-late 1980's)--dappled, intense color saturation, fluid, folded, and ruffled in form, and large, yet ephemeral, in volume.  The color red, in glass, is one of the most difficult and sensitive with which to work.  The midnight-blue interior contrasts sharply with the multi-colored reds, oranges and pinks of the exterior, and the form is perfectly emphasized by the sensuous red lip.  This piece has the added feature of a double base which allows multiple display options.  It was recently (before the current deYoung show opened [see below]), appraised by a nationally recognized art dealer and Chihuly expert at $32,000.00.  By virtue of its dynamic beauty, it will only increase in value. Dale Chihuly is perhaps the world's leading glass artist. His international fame comes from his Christo-like installations in Venice (1998) and the Citadel of David in Jerusalem (2000). These "environments" over the canals of Venice and the historic site of David's Jerusalem literally changed these venues into magically different places. His 70 by 30 foot lobby ceiling at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, and his lobby chandeliers in many buildings  and corporate headquarters across America are other examples of Chihuly's fantastic large installations. Currently, Chihuly is on display at the de Young Museum in San Francisco where the entire 12,000-square foot display area is given over to his works. Moreover, a 30 foot tower is on exhibit outside the museum and 3 more large works are installed in the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. John Buchanan, director of both facilities, calls Chihuly "the greatest living artist in the world today." (WSJ 8-6-2008) Whether considering his majestic, dramatic large works or his personal pieces, such as the Macchia bowl for sale here, Dale Chihuly is a phenomenon whose art will be marveled at through the ages. This glass bowl will be available for inspection by appointment only.  Payments will be accepted by PayPal or wire transfer.   The sale will be FOB Seattle, and shipping and insurance is not included in the sale price. The listed shipping cost of $200 is an estimate of what the buyer would pay a company to package and ship.  The owner is willing to assist the buyer by delivering the piece to a professional Seattle packaging and shipping company of the buyer's choice.
